Can you believe it took until the 7th of January to post the first forecast for 2020? I know, it’s absolutely terrible. Inexcusable really. Sometimes I really wonder what sort of a sham operation this whole free surf forecast deal is. But be that as it may… HAPPY NEW YEAR! And so forth…
The last forecast played out mostly as expected – completely shithouse on the South Coast, fun at Yorkes and with a fun little run of small waves on the Mid Coast. An interesting aside… the Mid and Yorkes are often good in January because any storms that form out in the Indian ocean get a clean westward run thanks to large summer High pressure systems presenting calm seas to the East. This day in 2018 was epic over at Yorkes, and s a few sets even nudged head-high on the Mid Coast. But enough of this nostalgic crap. What lies ahead? Read on…
A new WSW swell will lift wave heights overnight and winds will be favourable for west-facing coast early on Wednesday. The Mid Coast should be in the 1′ range with bigger sets, low tide is late morning so around lunchtime could be the go. Yorkes looks fun between Pondie and Berry Bay with clean conditions and head high waves.
The wind will have more North in it on Thursday, and this is probably your one and only chance in the next week to score clean conditions on the South Coast. A 10 knot nor-easter will tend more Northerly after lunch at 10 knots so the arvo will be clean between Goolwa and Parson’s with 2′ waves easing later in the day. The Mid Coast will fade a bit, back to around 1′. A southerly change will roll through sometime overnight.
Early on Friday it’ll be cooler with an onshore SW wind at 15 – 20 knots. The Mid Coast will be 1 – 2′ early, building 2 – 3′ later but messy as the breeze picks up. A less favourable swell direction will leave Middleton around 1′ in the morning, picking up slightly with a combo of wind and groundswell after lunch. Quality will be poor all day.
The breeze will be more Southerly early on Saturday, around 12 knots early but picking up to 20 knots after lunch. A new SW swell will lift wave heights on the South Coast to around 3 – 4′ at Middleton, but quality looks dreadful. the Mid Coast should pivk up to 1 – 2′ after lunch, but anywhere exposed will be wind affected. The southern end of South Port will offer some shelter.
Easterly winds will return early Sunday and settle in for the day, not getting much over 10 knots. The Mid Coast will have some 1′ leftovers, and a good Southerly swell should bring surf in the 4′ range to Middleton. What a pity it’ll be cross-shore, lumpy and brown.
The breeze will hopefully have a bit more North in it early next week, probably NE on Monday morning. Middleton should remain in the 3 – 4′ range but it’ll be lumpy early. The Southerly swell will miss the Mid Coast, and it’ll probably be flat.
Another front will probably arrive sometime around Tuesday, but let’s see how that looks in a week.
The holiday period has been OK so far, and at least there are a few options over the next 7 days.
